1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.
3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
God’s many names in Scripture reveal to us God’s character, His works, and His relationship to His people. The names which God chose for Himself, and which are ascribed to Him in the Word of God, declare much about His person. God’s names tell us many things about His care and concern for His own.
The personal name of God, Yahweh (YHWH), comes from a verb which means “to exist, to be.” This, plus its usage, shows that this name stresses God as the independent and self-existent God of revelation and redemption. (See Exodus 3:13-15). Compounds of Yahweh are designations or titles which reveal additional realities about God’s character.
As we read and meditate on Psalm 23, we can see that our great God has placed His Name all over the psalm. Below are nine of the compound names of God and how they are reflected in the truths of Psalm 23. Yahweh, the great I AM, is truly a great Shepherd.
